Freeze dry your extra Halloween candy into fun treats

There are so many things you can do with a Harvest Right Freeze Dryer. A freeze dryer allows you to preserve your garden produce, create an emergency food supply, make healthy snacks, save leftovers and eliminate food waste, and even provide nutritious food for your pet. But, turning candy into delicious and fun treats is, by far, the most fun use of a freeze dryer.

Ask freeze dryer owners what the very first thing they tried to freeze dry was and the answer is, more often than not, some sort of candy. Skittles and gummy bears seem to be the go-to candy to try. While most freeze-dried food looks nearly exactly like it does when it is fresh, some candy changes drastically. Gummy bears puff up and quadruple in size. Skittles pop out of their shell. Salt water taffy expands and is so airy that it melts in your mouth. Freeze drying candy makes you feel like a mad scientist performing experiments, but the best part is the results of your experimentation are unbelievably tasty treats.

While chocolate can be difficult to freeze dry, it is still possible to freeze dry candy that contains some chocolate. Milk Duds and Junior Mints are both chocolate-coated candy that many people love when freeze dried. So, don’t know what to do with all your extra Halloween candy? Try freeze drying it. While not every candy takes to freeze drying, it is still fun to experiment. And the best part about freeze drying candy is that even failures tend to still be delicious to eat.

Hi Byron,

I really do appreciate your videos on the Harvest Right. They are very informative and give me ideas on things to try out. I am waiting on a purchased freeze dryer and in the meantime I am trying to learn all I can about it.

One thing that came to mind and I’ve looked everywhere for an answer for is let say your harvest right completes the process and it’s 3 in the morning or maybe you are at work and it finishes. Is it necessary to be right there when it is finished or is it okay for the batch to sit in the Harvest Right until you wake up or come home from work?

Thanks.

Hi Brent, You don’t need to be there when it finishes. It will hold the product until you are able to get there. Sometimes this may be more than a full day depending on when you get to it.
